About this examination
What transient elastography measures
Vibration-controlled transient elastography is a special type of ultrasound used to measure liver stiffness. Increased stiffness may be associated with liver fibrosis. The measurement is one part of a clinical assessment and does not, by itself, explain the cause of a result or provide a complete diagnosis.
Results need clinical interpretation
A clinician interprets the measurement alongside a person’s history and other relevant information. The exact technique and any preparation can vary, so instructions should come from the clinician and the centre arranging the examination.
Ask the centre to confirm whether this examination is available, whether a referral is required and what preparation applies to your appointment.
